On Saturday, February 23, 2019, the South Cobb HS Science Olympiad Team competed at the Georgia Tech Regional Tournament against 19 teams from 12 high schools around the Atlanta Metro area. Three Cobb County Schools competed at Georgia Tech: South Cobb HS, Kennesaw Mountain HS and Sprayberry HS.
Science Olympiad is a nationally recognized science program and competition for teams of up to 15 students competing in 23 different events over the course of the day. The activities emphasize doing and applying science.
At Georgia Tech, 7 out of the 12 schools brought in 2 teams. South Cobb HS competed with one team (11 girls and 4 boys) in 18 events and beat Sprayberry HS in 12 events. The South Cobb team won four medals and ranked 1st place in Geologic Mapping (2 medals) and 4th place in Herpetology (2 medals). The team ranked top 10 in 12 events.
This is a tremendous feat for a newly formed team competing at the Regional level. Also, the majority of the students on the South Cobb team are freshman and five are sophomores. The medal winners are all freshman students.
The South Cobb team competed in two other Tournaments this year and has demonstrated substantial growth over the course of this season. We are excited about their potential and are looking forward to the 2019-2020 season.
We would like to congratulate the entire team for their dedication, hard work and accomplishments over the course of their first season
